Gorgeous Island, but Service and Food Quality Need Serious Improvement

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 days ago

The island itself is absolutely stunning—peaceful, secluded, and perfect for a relaxing getaway. We genuinely enjoyed the natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere, which were definitely the highlights of our stay. The staff were friendly and welcoming, but there were several service issues that impacted our overall experience. We had scheduling and communication problems with a spa appointment, which was frustrating. After bringing it to the attention of the General Manager, she was very understanding and offered us a complimentary session, which we appreciated. It showed the team was trying, but staff training and consistency still need work. Our room was nice and spacious, and we initially looked forward to staying in a deluxe beachfront bure. However, we were disappointed to find that we couldn’t actually see the beach from our room due to thick bushes and trees blocking the view. In addition, there were quite a few bugs in the room, and the towels provided were old and stained, which really took away from the sense of luxury. Unfortunately, the food was another major letdown. The selection was very limited, and the freshness was questionable. Toward the end of our stay, both of us experienced digestion issues that we believe may have been related to the food. On our final night, the lobster served was not fresh, and the only replacement offered was a basic menu item—which felt disappointing and not in line with the level of service expected from a 4.5-star resort. We also booked a beach picnic lunch, which turned out to be a disaster. We were dropped off at a beach with visible trash and debris, and the “setup” was just two mats and a pillow placed off to the side. We voiced our concerns to the GM, who apologized and attempted to reschedule the experience. However, due to bad weather, we couldn’t do it another day. This brings us to a key point: most guests are only here for a short period, and weather is always a factor. So getting things right the first time is crucial—there’s often no second chance to make it up. The resort must be better prepared and more attentive from the outset, especially given the high price point and strong reputation it carries. Overall, while the island is beautiful and the staff tried to make things right, the resort needs to improve significantly in terms of food quality, room maintenance, staff training, and attention to detail to truly live up to its luxury branding.

Level of service needs to lift

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We were really disappointed with our stay at Yasawa. The level of service that you expect for the cost to stay here was well below standard. We felt at times as if we were an inconvenience - not by all, but some service was really lacklustre and not the usual Fijian warm and welcoming experience. It is the little things that go a long way. Sadly we won't be back the level of service needs to lift considerably if you want to gain and retain a reputation as a luxury resort

An authentic, welcoming and luxurious low volume Fiji resort set in a tropical paradise both in and out of the water.

I rate this a five star couple retreat experience from beginning to end. The 8 seater Island Hoppers flight in from Nadi is an experience in itself with incredible views of the beautiful Yasawas and surrounding reefs whetting the appetite for arrival. The airstrip transfer and check in process was smooth and professional by resort AM Jope, Sikeli and their team. The welcome we and fellow arrivals received from Kaydee the resort GM was heartfelt, informative and refreshing, complete with a lovely welcome song from staff. The arrival in our room was spectacular, we had the double bure on the hill at the southern end of the resort, a luxurious 2br 2 bth villa with a large balcony, and were greeted with sweeping views of the coastline and cliffs, jungle, beach, ocean and reefs. My wife was impressed with the champagne I had pre-organised for our arrival. Complete with the stocked mini bar and Fijian sunshine this made for a relaxing afternoon at the bure, reading and sunbathing on the day bed and cooling off in the private outdoor shower (there were 2 of these at our bure). 6:30 was nightly cocktail hour, and as we arrived on a Sunday, there was a magnificent staff gospel singing choir on the beach. It was obvious from the speech by resort owner Erin, that the local culture is respected with Sunday being a quiet day at the resort with minimal staffing so local villager staff who make up the majority of staff can participate in village religious and cultural festivities. Sai and Sami had the cocktails down pat, by the end of the stay we had tried all the local specials!! Meals were always a highlight, with plenty of variety on offer and often featuring local cuisine. The local fresh caught seafood platter was spectacular. The service from all waitstaff including Kara, Jerry and led by Manasa and Wati was outstanding, friendly and attentive. Despite all this, the highlights for me were the day activities, private picnics at amazing private white sandy beach and snorkelling spots, and a private diving trip to a couple of the most outstanding coral reef dive spots I have seen, healthy and vibrant with beautiful coral and fish specimens. These were ably organised by activities and dive master Pedro, and we felt safe and looked after by all activities staff including captains Bale, Vuni, Apo and Smiga. Our 4 night stay was great but would have loved to have stayed longer, there was heaps more to do we didn’t get to. Thanks again for a great time, we will be back again!

True Paradise

My husband and I spent an amazing 7 nights here in Beachfront Bure 2, and it was more than we had hoped for. The small size of the resort makes it easy to connect with the staff and other guests and nothing is ever crowded. The snorkeling here is amazing, we have been to 3 different Yasawa islands now and the coral here was the most vibrant we have seen. The relaxed pace was exactly what we needed, and although many of the other guests did not respect it, we appreciated the rule against phones in the restaurant and used it to help ourselves disconnect. The spa package is a must, truly an incredible deal with a treatment every single day. I highly recommend the massages- they are incredible! We loved going to happy hour, hearing about the options for the next day, scheduling our spa, and having a nice dinner. And nice doesn't go far enough, the food is incredible! Such variety for somewhere so remote, and everything was delicious. My husband was over the moon about the coffee too, its the first place we've stayed in the Yasawas that didn't have instant coffee. The staff is all so friendly, and each of the evening activities (singing, kava, dancing) were a beautiful and fascinating peek into Fijian culture. The caves trip is a must do, and the private beach picnics really have you feeling like the only people in the world, in some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Smige and Pedro plan wonderful activities and were amazing at helping us get everything we wanted out of this trip! My husband does not like to go anywhere twice, but he said this resort is one we are coming back to!

Paradise- gentle- chill

Yasawa= Paradise. My husband & I had the pleasure of staying for 8 days, was not long enough. From the smooth 30 minute flight over the turquoise water, you arrive, to be greeted from the staff & taken to resort. You feel so very welcomed, all the staff throughout our stay were wonderful. Our Bure was perfect, pleasant walk along the beach or paths to pool, bar, reception , spa & restaurant. Bure was so very clean, daily service if needed, turn down at night. Outside shower is fabulous. You feel like you are the only people around, the Bures are seclude & surrounded by trees & gardens.Loved sitting on the deck in the evening. Chilling on the li-lows or hammock in the shade during the day. Massages at the Spa are extra relaxing, hearing the waves & the cool ocean breeze, next level.Day trip to Blue Lagoon was a highlight, the staff make sure you are safe, comfortable & have a fun time.Food was nice & well & truly enough to eat.A trip to the village & school is worth doing, the kids at school are so very well behaved, laughing cheeky & happy. Yasawa is a place to unwind, disconnect, relax, & appreciate it’s natural charm. A gentle resort with truly beautiful staff. Thank you for allowing us to be able stay at the very special piece of paradise.
